First General Meeting and Auditions

Hello all,

It was lovely meeting everyone who came to the social and we're sorry if you left with more pen covering your body than your t-shirts. I myself had part of the communist manifesto indelibly marked above my elbow for two days.

MEETING:We hope to see everybody this coming Friday (16th) at 18:00 upstairs in Gassy Jacks (Sailsbury Rd - just message if you need directions). We're going to finally get down to the nitty gritty of what Comedy Society is about and we'd love to have your input, especially for the radio show, podcast and future endeavors. We'd like to have a chat over a couple of pints and hopefully get to know some of you who hope to join the writing groups or try your hand at stand up. We will be answering any questions you have for us, unless they concern advanced geography.

Speaking of which...

AUDITIONS:We wanted to let you know asap about the audition date for our slot at RAID festival, as it is fast approaching. On the 22 October at 18:00 (venue tbc) have prepared a few minutes of stand up or sketch ideas and our friendly panel will be there to receive you. The date for the festival is 1 Dec so we'll let you know asap so you can get writing. Sorry for the time pressure.

Big news!

We are continuing to make our presence known around the university and have now been given the go-ahead for our very own Podcast (which willl be under the supervision of Stuart Gardener) and weekly radio show. As I speak Courtney is creating an event for our very first social (organised by the lovely Aimee Wigley) which is taking place next Wednesday and will give us all a chance to get to know each other. We are hugely looking forward to forming our writing groups, but since the exciting news about the radio show, we are going to be needing material very soon. Anyone who writes well by themselves is perfectly welcome to get going asap and send us anything you've got! Our staff meeting on Sunday was very productive and in general, we are aiming for a social a month and hopefully also organising trips to see stand-ups whenever they are on around the city.

The Real Hassle

Hi guys,
Back from a fantastic day of hassling outside the union and being asked multiple times to "say something funny", we've been recruiting like crazy.

It was great to see such a range of ages, personalities and gender (well, I suppose that's more binary-we didn't have any hermaphrodites). We managed to reel in freshers, fellow ticket distributors, non-students, a girl with really brilliant shoes and also managed to fit in time for political and metaphysical discussions in which we received Socialist literature and a copy of "Basic Elements of the Christian Life". Altogether a successful day.

I know a lot of you signed up to get information about when we'll be off to open mic-nights or putting on a review, but I would implore everyone not to write off sketch writing or stand up straight away. Writing in groups can be a great experience and what with all the meeting and mingling that will be going on at socials, everyone is bound to find others with a similar sense of humour. Our fantastic Social Secretary Aimee Wigley is in the process of organising our first social, so I guess she'll let you know about that very soon.

On another note, we have just received an email from the People and Planet Society who have invited us to perform on December 1 for their festival "RAID" to raise money for AIDS charities. This is very exciting for all of us, especially for me, as apparently the pun I wrote on the poster that got us noticed wasn't as detrimental to our prospects as we'd feared.

Welcome!

Hello all Members/Future Members/Interested Parties/Nosy Folk!

This is the fledgling blog of the currently fledgling Cardiff Comedy Society! We'll pretty much be using this as a sounding board and place to advertise events etc to the non-facebook contingency.

If you're wondering what we're about, we are basically a society for all things comedy, as Cardiff University is, bizarrely, one of the few that doesn't have a Comedy Society. However, we are firmly of the belief that this is not because of a lack of comedic talent, so we're looking for stand-ups, sketch writers, comedy performers and anything else of the humourous want to join us.

Currently we're figuring out the interest levels amongst the student population with a view to organise an initial meeting in the next couple of weeks. After that the world of comedy is our oyster; we'll be going to open-mic nights, possibly hosting some of our own, having writing groups, having all important boozy socials and possibly a trip to the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, one of the world's best known comedy Festivals.
